What is Tree Pruning

Tree pruning involves selective removal of plant parts, in this case, branches! You might prune a tree in order to remove deadwood, to control the tree's directional growth referred to as shaping, to improve or maintain a tree's overall health, to increase health and safety due to the potential of falling branches.

We utilise specialised pruning methods to target damaged, dead, diseased, non productive or structurally unsound tissue from trees. Our highly qualified tree pruning team complete pruning techniques that include crown reduction and pollarding to ensure that the tree's limbs are kept healthy and intact.

Tree pruning is a highly risky operation that requires a great amount of skill and knowledge. In addition the health and safety of our trained staff and the general public is of the highest importance. All our tree surgeons are both highly trained and experienced in all aspects of tree pruning.

Why Prune a Tree?

We prune tree in order to remove branches that have been affected by disease, insect infestation or have received mechanical damage. By pruning we actively prevent damage or at the least can be limited, saving the tree. In addition infected or damaged branches can cause safety hazards for those beneath and to close-by building and utilities

By regularly pruning a tree the tree's natural shape and appearance is maintained. It is important to not prune too often as this can cause damage to the tree's structure. Our team are able to offer advice on exactly how often to prune your tree.

Tree Pruning

Tips on What Not to Do

  • Prune without a good reason
  • Remove any more than 25 percent of foliage during a growing season.
  • Prune a newly planted tree for the first year, unless you are removing dead or broken branches.
  • Prune within 10 feet of a utility.
  • Try to tackle a pruning job that requires a chain saw and ladder work
  • Leave branch stubs, or cut off the branch collar (not make a flush cut).
  • Climb the tree with climbing spikes
  • Use wound paint
  • Strip out inner foliage and branches (also called lion-tailing)

Feedback from a
Few of Our Customers

The guys from Tree Dr are truly the specialists. Richard came out to do a couple of site inspections at no charge, gave me advice a few issues I had. The team did a magnificent job of trimming my 5 giant trees on the property. They also took everything away and tidied up. I would recommend them to anyone. Excellent service. Thanks Richard and team.
